What is Chiropractic?

The origin of chiropractic dates back to 1895 and DD Palmer but some believe it has been around in other forms of healing touch prior to that. The origin of the word chiropractic comes from the Greek words cheir, meaning hand and praktos meaning done. When you put them together it translates to done by hand.

Chiropractic is a non-invasive healing modality. Doctors of Chiropractic assess the musculoskeletal and nervous system of a person to identify any underlying imbalances that are contributing to dysfunction or dis-ease in the body. Chiropractors use their hands to feel for areas of spinal fixation or misalignment. These areas of spinal fixations are minute, merely millimeters, but create an interference in the body such as increased tension on the spine, the discs, the nervous system, or the muscles.

The joint surfaces of the vertebrae contain many receptors that feed back into the brain alerting it to the dysfunction. The brain then sends out a pain signal via the nervous system alerting your consciousness and body of the dysfunction. Pain is your body’s way of alerting you that something is not functioning properly or is imbalanced.

It is the job of the chiropractor to identify these fixations in the spine and alleviate them utilizing a chiropractic adjustment or manipulation. Your body naturally wants to feel well and be in a state of balance. When a chiropractor performs an adjustment, it relieves the fixation and pressure that has been placed on the nervous system. It is then the body is able to begin the process of healing itself.
